The Proposal

THE STORY

Max and I were traveling to Australia, New Zealand and Tahiti this past summer in early August. I had a sneaking suspicion something was going to happen- but you know Max- so I was on pins and needles the whole time. We started our trip by exploring Australia, and while shopping in Sydney, Max asks me if I want to look at engagement rings. I give him a look of utter disbelief and ask "what the heck you don't have one yet?" Max proceeds to give me the pitch about not buying one because Australia is the diamond capital of the world and there is no sales tax, PLUS this lets me pick out the one I want. So, I get to thinking and I'm like alright. We proceed to spend the next few hours shopping for rings and I find several that I fall in love with. The next day, continuing his deception, Max has me go shopping by myself while he returns to the diamond district to get a ring. I know something is up now, but I still don't know when its going to happen. We then leave Australia for New Zealand, spend several days there and nothing. We tour the Lord of the Rings film site, and still nothing. Now almost a week later we're in Tahiti.

We spend a few days snorkeling, getting massages, enjoying our over the water bungalow, but still nothing. The next night, I have calls all day and Max spends the day at the swim up bar. He promises me that we will go out to a nice dinner that night though, so I am getting excited! As the night approaches Max says he doesn't feel well and wants to reschedule our night out. BOOOO! He then comes out of the bathroom looking sharp in linen pants and a collared shirt. GAME ON! He downplays it though and says that we are going to the sister resort to grab some cocktails and listen to some live music. On the way to dinner, he says why dont we check in real quick so I can cancel our dinner reservations. Disappointed, I go with him.

We go to dinner and as Max says Vallejo reservation for 2 the host perks up and says right this way. I look around thinking what is going on, the restaurant is the other way. He then takes us out of the restaurant down and around and over a bridge. Crossing the bridge I see our own private motu (island) with a beautiful table with King and Queen chairs with a butler and 2 musicians. I immediately start crying. Max looks @ me and in typical Max fashion says, "Why are you crying" REALLY Max! I reply "I don't know". The butler pops the champagne and Max kicks over the chair drops to a knee and then cries throughout the proposal. He now says it was merely allergies. Of course I said ABSOLUTELY! Once I looked @ the ring I realized he didn't buy it in Australia he has a ring for a few months. That was all part of his elaborate plan, he had it with him before we even left and I later find out that he was at a bar drinking and gambling while he told me he was out buying my ring in Australia. BEST surprise EVER!!!

ONE RING TO RULE THEM ALL

The ring has a story all its own. Max had been looking for months, and during his summer associate position at a San Francisco law firm had been spending his weekends going back and forth to LA and OC. On his birthday weekend we both went down to Orange County for a few days. On the day of his birthday, Max wanted to go to the Bruery, his favorite craft beer place in Placentia. While there he notices a guy wearing a gold dust saloon T-shirt. This happens to be our favorite bar in Union Square, and the only place you can get sub-$15 cocktails in the area. Max starts talking to the guy and it turns out he is an antiques dealer. I leave to go make a call and little do I know Max and the guy (Randy) are talking about why he was down there and somehow Max ends up mentioning that he is looking for rings. It turns out this guys best friend is a jewelry dealer and has a store in OC. Max asks where it is and gets the information. We end up drinking with this guy and his friends for a few hours. Before we leave Max and him talk again about meeting up and they exchange contact information. Randy mentions that he enjoyed our company so much that he is willing to meet up with Max the next time he comes down and make sure he gets the "family discount." Max remains in touch with Randy over the summer coming down and is introduced to Mario of Valencia jewelry. Max doesnt see anything the first time he is down, but has narrowed his favorite shops to 3. He keeps his parents involved and they go out and help with the search when he cant come down to OC because of work. A few weeks before the trip, he finds a ring that he loves, but still isn't sure. The Sunday after that his parents call him and say Mario and Randy called and they have "THE" ring. I say its Sunday, I cant make it down. They send me a picture and say, this is what you have been waiting for. I take a look and immediately drop everything. I fly down to OC on Sunday morning at 11, and by 1 I am at Mario's shop. I take a look at the ring and immediately fall in love with it. Mario lets me take it outside, walk in the sun with it (if you know about ring shopping they rarely let you take it out of the special LED lights). I know this is the one and begin to negotiate with Mario. I purchase the ring, and we have remained in touch since, my mother and several friends have used him and he will be making my wedding ring.

All this from striking up a random conversation because of a T-shirt!
